One aspect of [PROPELLERHEADS] Reason I enjoy is the fact that you can have a customizable work environment with very low stress on your CPU. REFILLS are the patches and samples that are used for the built-in samplers and synths within the REASON programming environment- KIKBAK- A L.A. Based third party developer who assembled several readymade sample -sets treated processed thru MPC 60 and various hardware components

kikbackonline.com available here

Below is a conversation with producer/sound designer –KIKBAK

How long have you been using the software (Reason) ?
Just for the record, I dont use Reason anymore. I use Record+Reason. I started using Reason in 2006.
How were you introduced to it?
A friend of mine introduced me to it back in 2002. He was using it as a sound module with his mpc 3000.
Did you have a hardware background before using Reason
Do you still use your hardware?
Yes, My first drum machine was a Sequential Circuits DrumTraks, It used to get really hot and cut off. I also had a casio sk-1 at that time. In the 8th Grade, I was introduced to the EMU sp1200 by a Local DJ mentor “Dj Boywonder” he was like a big brother to me. He showed me how to sequence, sample and truncate the sounds and stuff. He would let come over and make beats on his Sp1200, he had a ton of records. A couple years later I was introduced to the mpc 60ii. In 1995, I got an ASR-10 as a gift and a Tascam 8 track. So, yes I come from a hardware background.
I still use my mpc 60ii to sample drums and stuff. I have some hardware sitting around that I dont use anymore, like my asr10, emu planet phatt, proteus 2000, korg x5dr, and roland Juno6.
How has the response been to your Refills??
The response has been pretty good. Its still selling in the propshop and the guys in the forum and random folks really like it. And its a good value.
Do you use them live (in performance)?
No, Im not a performer.
What type of processing do you use to treat your sounds??
The normal stuff, Reverb , Delays, Insert FX, Compression, Gates etc
What are your musical influences??..
My first musical influence was Reggae and Calypso(Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Yellow Man). My uncle used to play those records when I was a kid. Then Came the Hip hop and R&B stuff. I remember my mom taking me rollerskating and they would play Rappers Delight. I have alot of influences bro…Here is a short list..The who, The Beatles, Cream, Jimmi Hendrix, The Animals, Prince, Lionel Richie, Steel Pulse, Metallica, Poison, Run Dmc, Suger hill gang, The Fat Boys, UTFO, Jeffery Osborne, Micheal Jackson, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Ric Ruben, Marley Marl, Mark the 45 king, Hank Shock Lee and the Bomb squad, Public Enemy DJ, Jazzy Jeff and the fresh Prince…I can go on and on..
Where are you based?
Im based in Los Angeles.
In a future Reason update what would like to see?
In a future Record update, I would like to see “Fader Grouping on the Mixer”.
Do you work entirely “in the box”?
Yes Strictly Reason+Record. I also Have logic, but i dont use it much.
What is your studio set up??
Apple Mac Pro Quad Intel Mac 2.66
Yamaha NS-10m Studio Monitors
Yamaha Natural Sound Stereo Power Amplifier M-4
Novation Remote 61 SL
Akai MPD 24

ASIO4ALL is a universal ASIO driver for WDM audio. It attempts to find the kernel streaming interface of your audio device and adds an ASIO driver interface on top of it, using a variation of a technique dubbed “DirectKS” In layman’s terms, this driver helps decrease * latency- [*Latency- the proximity between initial input and output. When you depress a key or pad on your hardware device, the time it takes for you to hear a signal measured in milliseconds]

Prior to adding this additional driver, the amount of latency I was experiencing was painful- The soundcard and speaker manufacturer REALTEK is known to conflict with certain USB hardware thereby creating latency -Troubleshooting the software settings prompted a return to hardware to prevent said problems. But having resolved this problem, I am now operating with a healthy marriage of both.

Trust me , first hand , this patch is a life saver!!

As a long standing Reason user, I’ve always griped about it’s lack of VST compatibility. Sure, Rewire is the obvious solution but in order to stay in the Reason environment something had to give. Record 1.0 helped to answer those queries to large degree. SSL emulation and the many routing options gave us alot chew on. But wanderlust kept my eyes roaming to other apps to satiate various needs- Enter the KONG drum synth sampler- a beast of a unit. KONG is the perfect compliment to the pre-existing modules with drum synthesis transient shaping and physical modeling to customize your sounds-

This is one of the many updates/additions slated for REASON 5.0

Though still in the BETA stages the REASON 5.0 update is on track for the end of the summer-
